Holistic Pet Remedies: Mange Mite, Scabies, Ringworm, Fungus

Most people think parasites and fungus are pests of nature and it is just plain unlucky if their pet gets infested. The dog, cat, horse, rabbit or hamster becomes victim of these pests.

That is actually very unscientific thinking. In nature, healthy animals (including human) do not get infestation. Sure, a bobcat may get a few fleas, mites or mosquitoes investigating him or her; however, its healthy immune system will not attract enough parasites to cause serious problem. The signals a healthy animal emit - chemically, energetically and physically - do not call for parasites to do their job.

An underdeveloped immune system (young animals) or a weak, sick and confused immune system will attract plenty of parasites, fungus, bacteria or virus, depending on the pH and emotional imbalance within. The more imbalances, the more germs mutate and reproduce to become the pests that nature needs to cleanup the organism (your pet). In very weak pets, the pests will even destroy the host as nature intends it. Since this is not what we want, we need to rebalance your pet's bio-terrain so it will send out different signals to the parasites.

Mange or scabies is the result of spider mites burrowing under the skin. Tick is also a mite. Ringworm is actually a fungus, the lesions are ring-shaped. Bacterial dermatitis (furunculosis) can be acute or chronic. Nocardiosis is bacterial, usually infects a granuloma. Ear mites, ear infection, otorrhoea, eczema, dermatitis and puritis can all be the result of mites, bacteria, fungus, virus, other parasites or a combination of them. Treatment methods are similar.

Follicular or dermodex mange - squamous type: Prefers young animals. Hair falls out, skin is dry and scaly, bluish discoloration. Itchy.

Follicular or dermodex mange - pustular type: Small pustules are developed at the hair follicle, often around the jaw, elbows and ankles. Lesions, crusts with pus.

Sarcoptic mange: More common, contagious and resembles human scabies (though not the same). Skin is severely itchy and irritated, resulting in animals biting, licking and scratching to the point of bleeding and hair loss. Small pimples are common which become scabby. A musty odour is present. Untreated, skin becomes thickened and looks folded like elephant skin.

Otodectic mange: Prefers cats but dogs are not immune. Lives in the ears. Your pet may have brownish wax, shake and rub the ears a lot and may have blood, scabs or lesions behind the ear flap due to intense scratching.

Ringworm: Most common fungi responsible are microsporum and trichophyton. There is a natural affinity with the hair follicles. There may be a crusty appearance, vesicles, circular or ring-like lesions, raised scabs with a darker pitted centre.

Bacterial dermatitis: Staphylococcal and streptococcal families are most common culprits but may include other microorganisms. You may observe itchy rash, swelling, vesicles, erupted vesicles with fluid and pus, skin scratched raw, thickens and becomes folded (elephant skin). Bacterial infection can occur as other parasites open the skin surface to such opportunity.

In severe cases, mange can cause major skin damage, blood loss, anemia, infection, fever, progressive weakness and even death. Untreated, your pet can become vulnerable to more parasites and pathogens which form an undesirable snowball effect.

There are five things that must be done to reverse the trend of parasitic invasion:

  • First, excess parasites, fungus, bacteria and viruses must be killed to give your pet an opportunity to rebuild his/her health.

  • Second, damages cause by parasites and pathogens must be healed to regain strength and temporary wholeness.

  • Third, toxins must be cleared from your pet's body that created the imbalance biochemistry within its own terrain. Further toxins must be avoided (processed pet food, vaccinations, chemical drugs). If not possible, in the case of necessary surgery, detox afterwards to clear them out of your pet's system.

  • Fourth, nutritional supplements need to be given to rebuild your pet's body and immune defense.

  • Lastly, any emotional imbalances (stress) must be rebalanced to regain full health.

Kaia - dog mange, dog scabies, dog mites, dog skin allergy problem

This photo with Kaia in her luscious Husky white coat was taken after her natural dog mange treatment. Kaia's groomer commented how beautiful her coat is. You'd never know she had a severe skin problem not long ago. Read on for her amazing recovery story...

Kaia, recently adopted female Siberian Husky, 2 yrs old, 51 lbs, has been diagnosed with canine demodex mange. She does have a smelly coat. Kaia is still adapting to the new pet guardian but each day their bond grows and she is given a very good home prepared natural diet. Her appetite is great, active and emerging from a loner to a social creature!

Per the vet she was on antibiotics and Ivermectin. She did not respond well to the Ivermectin, she would be stressed and continual panting. So the owner came to us for a more natural approach to treat dog mites.

"The WildPets Skin Trouble Lavendar Shampoo worked great! I noticed an immediate improvement and her coat still looked healthy. The itching intensity lowered and the heat in her skin has gone down."

Even though the itching intensity lowered, it never completely disappeared. Kaia is once again chewing on her paws (a sign of toxicity and allergic reaction).

Her inner thighs feel like they had a fever and you can see a rash, the heat in her skin has gone down but the owner can now feel scabs in her fur towards her vaginal area, it seems to be spreading to her chest, neck, around one ear and back to her legs.

She has lost hair on her abdomen and around her neck, also her hair seems to be thinning. These symptoms seem to be from dog demodex mites but there is another complication. Kaia has been using Goodwinal oil.

"The directions on the Goodwinal oil is to administer ten straight days, but Kaia seems to begin vomiting on the third day and I felt it was too toxic so I stopped. I am uncertain if this is a direct result from the Goodwinal oil or from the dog mites."

WildPets Skin Trouble Duster was recommended to take care of the dog mites in between shampooing as it seems to be a more serious case, and bathing too often will remove the natural protective oils produced by the body and not good for the skin. WildPets Skin Trouble Spray Plus was suggested for the additional skin symptoms and WildPets BIO D-Tox was ordered for detoxing potential harmful effects from the antibiotics, Ivermectin and Goodwinal oil.

With the positive results of the WildPets Skin Trouble Shampoo, the hope is to chase after the problem until it is completely healed. Two months later, here is the feedback:

"Kaia is once again her beautiful self! All of her hair has grown in, all three products in conjunction worked wonderfully. The natural pet shampoo hindered the dog mites from spreading; once she was dry the duster killed the remaining dog mites; if an isolated spot broke out the spray was an instant relief to alleviate her from chewing and gnawing on herself, then I dusted the spot to dehydrate the dog mites in the area.

Kaia's coat is full and lustrous. Her vet could not tell where the dog mites had once infested, all of her legs, belly, inner thighs, vaginal area, neck, hind quarters; all are all back to normal. Kaia currently has little blisters in between her middle toes other than that she is great. These blisters do not slow her down the vet believes they are dog mites so I am spraying and dusting.

Your advice of removing her from existing food and starting her on a raw food diet made a world of difference for her immune system. I now have a very playful energetic loving girl on my hands. l will forward a photo of her laying in the yard sunning completely content with life. I do receive a lot of compliments on how beautiful her coat is and what do I do? I have recommended this program to Kaia's vet so others will not have to hunt and seek pet mange treatment that works. I can only hope she forwards this information.

Thank you Pearl, without you I believe Kaia would have this skin problem for the rest of her life. Sincerely, Daphne & Kaia."

Stanley, a 7 year old ragdoll cat, has been battling with demodectic mites, ear mites, yeast and bacteria infection for over 2 years. Since Stanley almost died from a lime sulphur dip treatment, and all vet and even natural programs did not work long for him, the person wanted a gentler natural program for Stanley.

Stanley's case is quite severe, so we incorporated custom nutritional remedies, plus WildPets Skin Trouble Natural Shampoo and WildPets BIO Defense for Stanley. Now Stanley has used other brands of natural shampoos with 'seemingly' similar ingredients before but did not get the same results. Here is the feedback regarding the shampoo:

"Used your shampoo the last two weeks. I immediately can tell the difference. His coat has more moisture. There is less yeast surrounding his claws. I actually will apply it to his paws prior to the shampoo and it is really helping."

"In general, he is licking quite a bit less and sleeps through the night now - yeah. He is so much happier! Greatly reduced in my estimation (yeast & bacteria). We are definitely on the right track."

L. Haesler - Irvine, California, USA

PeKay, feline male, 1.5 year old, was very itchy with cat mange mites. The person had tried sulfur cream and other online products with short term effects. The animal guardian purchased WildPets Skin Trouble Shampoo, WildPets Skin Trouble Spray & WildPets BIO D-Tox and was waiting for the products in transit. However, PeKay was so itchy that the person asked me if I can help her cat before the products arrive. So we did long distance healing sending the same pet remedies in the WildPets Skin Trouble Spray to Pekay.

Update on the 2nd day: "Pekay seems calmer, happier, less agitated."

On the 3rd day: "Pekay is doing great! Happier, spending time with us. Sores and itching improving. What a blessing."

Two months later: "Pekay is doing good. His fur is growing back and he is happier. He almost finished one month detox, got over the healing crisis, and things are going good. Thank you!"

Four dogs of different ages, Golden Retrievers, same household, have been itching. No fleas found. They have been on a raw dog food diet for years, no known skin allergies. Finally, the animal guardians suspect dog mites (which is rather common and often mistaken as skin allergy).

They bathe the dogs with WildPets Skin Trouble Natural Shampoo once. After they dry, apply the WildPets Skin Trouble Duster once. Next day, to their surprise and amazement, all four dogs are no longer itchy.

"That (dog mites & itchy) problem has resolved quite well. I feel good about the products."

One year after the natural dog mite treatment, Wendy emails us with this note:

"It is a year since my note to Pearl on the success of ridding our Goldens of dog mites. They are still not scratching, so still dog mite free. I had actually forgotten all about this experience until logging into this website and looking at the products."

Wendy Galt - Coquitlam, British Columbia, Canada

"Hello, I want to contact you and let you know that our kitties are feeling and looking so much better. Since it is very cold now here in Ohio, they are appreciating that their fur is growing back on their posterior's!!! They are mainly indoor cats but like to wander around outside the house on nicer days. They are quickly back at the door wanting inside in this weather we're having now.

We applied the Skin Trouble Duster to the two cats that had the problem of losing their fur, itching, scratching and areas with scabs. These two kitties are both skittish and nervous, and there is no way of giving them a bath at all. They don't even like to be held by us, so that is why I chose your WildPets Skin Trouble Duster ... even though it was still a chore getting them to stay still long enough to apply the powder, I feel that they knew we were giving them something to help them.

I will apply this product as needed in the future. Perhaps these two kitties need one of your special mixtures to calm them down... I enjoyed your website and read about all of your natural healing products. My cats and I thank you for helping them get better, they are now playing and chasing each other about, instead of constantly scratching and being miserable. Thank you also for the quick shipping to me. Sincerely and with Best Wishes!"

Heidi Drewes - Deshler, Ohio, USA

"I have to tell you I have been using the shampoo and the spray on my Westie and he is getting soooo much better."

Donna C. - Langley, British Columbia, Canada

  • Consider switching to human-grade raw, semi-raw or cooked diet (organic raw is best). Feed your pets as much "live" foods as possible, there is very little life force in processed foods.

  • If your dog or cat is a fussy eater, try unseasoned cooked chicken (or turkey, ground lamb, ground beef, boneless cooked fish), real chicken soup, mashed pumpkin (any fibrous squash) and steamed rice initially to stimulate appetite and help settle the stomach. Add mashed broccoli later for added nutrients. Feel free to give grated raw or cooked veggies and fruit pieces (organic best, avoid nightshade veggies) that your pet enjoys and that his/her tummy can handle. Add new diet 25% at a time, 3-4 days at a time, to switch over.

  • Most insects and parasites prefer hosts that have a weak immune system and life force. They can tell by the odour and energy emitted by the host animal. It's the same reason why some people don't get bitten much while others get eaten alive! Build up your pet's immune system and biological terrain with our herbal and nutritional supplements.

  • Probiotics (WildPets G.I. Revitalizer) is essential to rebuild stomach bacteria destroyed by pathogens, parasites, chemical antibiotics, drugs and processed pet food.

  • Clean your home and bedding thoroughly with very hot water and soap if there are parasites. Steam clean carpet. Vaccuum and clean bedding regularly to reduce extent of infestation.

  • Use holistic remedies and therapies whenever possible. Avoid surgery if possible. Avoid vaccinations, chemical flea and dewormer programs, and chemical flea home treatment (see our Flea page for more info).

  • Regular detox is essential to good body house-keeping. Detox twice a year for optimum maintenance.

  • Good pack or herd rules, clear boundaries, lots of love, play, fun, exercise, sunlight and rest will keep your dogs, cats, horses and other pet animals at the peak of their spirit!

Mange Mites, Ringworm, Fungus Remedy Kits FAQ:

Q: How do I give the WildPets Skin Trouble Duster to my pet mice?

A: For your pet mice, put a small piece of slightly damp cloth on your hand (to prevent the powder from flying into your mice's eyes and nose), put some of the Skin Trouble Duster powder onto the cloth, wipe that onto your mice's skin, avoiding eyes and nose.

If you are dealing with bacterial or viral infection as well (possibly from the parasites' waste): First, use a warm damp cloth to wipe clean your mice the best you can. Second, wet your mice all over with WildPets BIO Defense (for the pathogens), then apply the WildPets Skin Trouble Duster as described above.

Note: Response to remedies and supplements varies by individuals and individual cases. If these products do not give complete healing, your pet may need one-on-one wholistic attention through our holistic consultation or consultation with a veterinarian.
